Program 2025-2026

Workshop Challenge Themes

Note: Workshop Challenge themes are selected to force the photographer to learn how to explore and work within the limitations of that assigned theme. You will only benefit, if you dedicate a full session or afternoon, while shooting images with the theme handicap.

The Third Wednesday Workshop will be a place for Conversation, Mentoring and Education. Our workshop programming will be able to expand on the first wednesday lecture for those with questions that were not answered at the time of the lecture.

We have many members who can offer advice and experience to our membership. Bring any images you would like to discuss. Talk about techniques and projects. A laptop with basic post processing in Lightroom or Photoshop will also be available to aid in processing questions and procedures.

Participants are encouraged to bring their images to the workshop for show and or supportive commentary. Rick has promised everyone a USB, so there will be no excuses.

High Dynamic Range Techniques & Night Photography

Brian Thompson is a working multimedia journalist, in his 40th year at The Expositor, the Postmedia daily newspaper in Brantford, Ontario.

His work runs the gamut from the peak action of high school sports and slice-of-life community moments, to concerts with legendary acts such as Aerosmith and KISS, flying in a CF-18 Hornet and a Lancaster bomber, soccer at the Pan Am Games, and twice accompanying children on a one-day, whirlwind trip to Disney World with the Sunshine Foundation.

Brian has been a finalist or winner of 22 Ontario Newspaper Awards over his career.

During his time off Brian and his wife Donna, who has developed (pun intended!) a keen interest in photography during their 35 years together, enjoy photographing a variety of subjects. They make road trips centered around visually-interesting destinations, including lighthouses and trains! He has taught photography workshops at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, been a guest speaker at numerous camera clubs in southern Ontario, and is the vice-president of the Brant Camera Club.

From The Artist
I am a full-time photographic artist based in Nova Scotia, where my spirit is sustained and my work is inspired by the wild coastal scenery and moody weather right outside my door.
Indeed, it was my passion for wild landscapes that gave me my start as a photographer. After spending my formative years on Canada’s Atlantic coast in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, circumstances stranded me for nearly twenty years in Toronto. Never happy in cities, I escaped at every opportunity ‘up north’ or ‘down east’ where I could find the breathing room that for me is so essential.
Along with my tent, canoe and hiking boots I always took a bag full of guidebooks about the natural history and geology of the places I visited. Gradually I progressed from reading these books to writing them, and my writing needed illustrations… and that’s  when I picked up a camera.
Now, twenty-five years later, I make my home again at the edge of the sea and my living from photography, using it to explore the landscape in the context of broader human and environmental themes. My portfolio includes an extensive list of publications, exhibitions, art/craft shows and teaching, with several books and feature articles in Canadian and U.K. magazines.
